Common Motorcycle Slang Terminology
If you’re new to the world of riding motorcycles, there are a number of things you should learn. One of the things that may not seem as obvious as maintenance or riding skills is the slang terminology that bikers tend to use with one another. Learning some of this jargon can help you to feel like you’re a part of the culture, so here are a few terms you may encounter.
Parts of the Bike
Ape-Hangers: This strange term refers to the high handlebars common on cruisers and vintage bikes that cause your arms to hang down when you hold them.
Fairings: The pieces of your bike that protect your legs and body from the heat of the engine by deflecting hot air to either side.
Petcock: The fuel valve which allows you to prevent fuel from flowing between your gas tank and your carburetor.
Lifestyle
ATGATT: “All the Gear, All the Time.” Refers to the fact that a responsible motorcyclist should always wear their gear to keep themselves safe on the road, including a helmet, visor or goggles, riding jacket and pants, boots, and gloves.
Cager: A car driver, but not in a nice way. Usually said to express frustration at a careless automobile’s maneuvering.
Hoon: A hooligan, a foolish and reckless motorcycle rider who tries to impress people and doesn’t pay attention to laws or safety rules. If someone calls you this, it’s time to cool it and enroll in some riding lessons.
